Made in New York is the first international online jazz competition that aims to churn out some of the best jazz talents across the globe. Jazz students from ANY country can bring their skills to limelight by submitting music videos online in seven different categories – yes, this is how the organizers of the competition make you attain worldwide fame, and that too within minutes of you uploading your video! The main judges for this colossal event are three legendary American jazz musicians – Lenny White, Joe Lovano, and Randy Brecker.
Legendary drummer Lenny White In 1969, he first appeared on Miles Davis' historic recording on Bitches' Brew later joining Corea's Return to Forever. Lenny White worked with iconic jazz artists including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others.
Lately in 2012 Lenny White, Chick Corea and Stanley Clark received a Grammy as Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
Multy grammy award winner Randy Brecker. Randy and Michael Brecker (The Brecker brothers) have carved out an indelible niche in the world of music. Hailed by pop and Jazz critics alike, The band they founded in 1975 was one of the first acts signed to the then-fledgling Arista Records. Recording six albums and garnering seven Grammy nominations from 1975-1982. Randy has performed or recorded with Stanley Turrentine, Billy Cobham, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Sandip Burman, Charles Mingus, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Horace Silver, Frank Zappa,Parliament-Funkadelic, Chris Parker, Jaco Pastorius, Dire Straits.
Grammy Award winner Joe Lovano His live work, specifically Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard, garnered a Down Beat "Jazz Album of the Year" award. Other releases include Trio Fascination and 52nd Street Themes. In the late 1990s, he formed the Saxophone Summit with Dave Liebman and Michael Brecker (now deceased, replaced with Ravi Coltrane). He played the tenor saxophone on the critically acclaimed 2007 McCoy Tyner album Quartet.
As Ben Ratliff opined in The New York Times, “It’s fair to say that (Lovano’s) one of the greatest musicians in jazz history.”
The judges will watch the videos remotely and choose the final winner, from eight candidates – seven finalists shortlisted by the committee, and one, by most popular votes. The winner will bag a guaranteed prize money of $3000, and additional prize money of 10% from the participant’s pool! For example, if there are 100 participants, the final winner will receive: $75 (participation fee) X 100 (no. participants) X 10 % = $3, 750, in addition to $3000! Exciting, isn’t it?
